Essential Depot's Food Grade Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)

Unlike most competitors who sell technical grade lye, Essential Depot's lye is Food Grade, proudly made in the USA, and lower in impurities. It is USP certified, non-GMO, and does not contribute to BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). Additionally, the lye is not animal tested since 1990.

Regarding Kosher and Halal certifications, the chlorine used in the manufacturing process does not come into contact with any animal products or byproducts, nor does it contain chemical additives that are organic in nature. Therefore, according to the Orthodox Union, the lye is acceptable for use in Kosher-related activities without certification. It is also considered Halal acceptable, as it does not contain alcohol or natural L-cysteine extracted from hair or feathers, animal fats, blood, or meat byproducts.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Certificates of Analysis (COA) are available upon request. All products are shipped in easy-to-store and easy-to-use resealable HDPE containers that are BPA-free and have child-resistant caps.

This lye is designated by the FDA as a food additive that is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. It has a wide range of applications, including:

Biodiesel and Bioethanol: Serves as a catalyst for the transesterification of methanol and triglycerides, as well as for pH adjustment and formation of in situ sodium methylate to prevent soap formation. Chemical Production: Used as a reactive intermediate and catalyst in chemical production, as well as in chemical processing plants for scrubbing and drying. Food and Dairy: Utilized in various food processing methods, such as washing and chemical peeling of fruits and vegetables, poultry, soft drink, chocolate, cocoa, and ice cream production. Metal Cleaning or Etching: Saponifies surface oils to create a thin soapy layer and etches the surface of certain types of metals, making it an important preparatory step for welding or painting applications. Soap Making: Specifically manufactured into evenly-sized micro pellets, ensuring consistent saponification.

It is important to exercise caution when purchasing drain openers from other suppliers, as many contain additional chemicals that can be undesirable and potentially harmful in food preparation applications. Essential Depot's lye does not contain any such added chemicals.

The physical properties of Essential Depot's Sodium Hydroxide include a boiling point of 2534°F (1390°C), a melting point (crystallization begins) of 590-608°F (310-320°C), a specific gravity of 2.13, and a pH that is strongly basic. Its solubility in water ranges from 42 g/100 g at 0°C (32°F) to 347 g/100 g at 100°C (212°F), and it has a solution rate that is twice as fast as flakes.
