Wonderful Soap Making in 4 Simple Steps
PRIZE-WINNING HARD SOAP
Step 1. Cleaning Fat. (This step may be omitted if freshly rendered fat or new lard is used). If larger cans are not available, the process can be done one quart at a time. First, boil 3 quarts of kitchen grease, lard, tallow or fat with 3 pints of water. Then, remove from heat and add 3 quarts of cold water to clean the fat and remove the salt. Skim off the clean, solidified fat for Step 3.
Step 2. Slowly dissolve 1/3 can of Red Crown Lye in 1 quart of water and allow it to cool to room temperature.
Step 3. Heat the fat to approximately 95 degrees. Slowly pour the lye solution from Step 2 into the fat, stirring as you pour. Stir for about 15 minutes until the mixture gets a honey-like consistency.
Step 4. Pour the mixture into a pan or wooden box that has been lined with a slightly damp cloth. Cover it with newspaper, a blanket, or a rug to hold in the saponification heat. After 24 hours, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars using a fine wire or string. Allow the soap bars to cure where air can reach them, but not in cold or drafty conditions. Ten to fourteen days of curing will provide a better soap.
Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide and caustic soda, is the main ingredient in lye soap production. Our lye comes in a safe container with a resealable child-resistant cap. Technical grade lye (food grade) is the preferred choice for soap making.
Lye has many other household uses, such as drain clog cleaning, oven grease removal, and as a cleaning agent. Its corrosive behavior allows it to effectively break down the toughest drain clogs of grease and hair without damaging your pipes. Lye is also a key ingredient in many cleaning agents, making it a great oven grease remover. However, sodium hydroxide should be handled with extra care.
If you want to make all-natural, award-winning, homemade, and handcrafted soaps, this is the lye you are looking for! Lye has traditionally been the main ingredient in soap making, and it continues to be the essential component for creating high-quality, long-lasting soap.
